Where Have All The Neighbors Gone?

by Melody & John

Melody put the last clean dish into the cupboard and folded the dishtowel, replacing it neatly on its rack. Her morning's housework was finished.

It had been an uneventful and fairly quiet morning. That was such an unusual state of affairs in this house that it was making Melody nervous. Tegan had gone with Milliardo and Treize to the library, but that wouldn't cause the household to be any quieter, she reasoned. She had checked on the chibis several times, sometimes suddenly appearing in whatever rooms they happened to be in, just in case they were up to something and had managed to hide it from her. Again.

When she had popped into the family room, Quatre and Trowa had looked up at her very strangely from the elaborate Lego city which they had spent the past few days building. Relena had been in the big rocking chair in the corner of the room, reading a storybook to her lapful of dollies for much of the morning. Wufei, Heero and Duo had spent a few hours quietly coloring in the basement. It was so nice to see them so preoccupied, lying on the floor, all drawing with their crayons on the same large piece of paper. And they weren't even fighting over the black crayon! She had complimented them on how well they have been getting along lately. Last time she had checked on them, they had been in the back yard engaged in an animated conversation while they were looking through a huge book that Rashid had given them, "The Boys' Guide to Mobile Suits". Now they were no where to be found. That was not a good sign! Melody walked quickly around to the front of the house and found them sitting on the front porch, completely absorbed in the neighbors' moving truck and the crew taking the belongings from the house. She stopped before they saw her so she could listen in on their conversation.

"Ya ever notice how much our neighbors move outta here?" Duo remarked.

"Yeah, this time they weren't even here for TWO months," Wufei observed solemnly.

"Well, that's longer than the Walters' lasted," said Heero. "They was gone in only four weeks."

"Well, I won't miss 'em," Wufei said scornfully. "They wouldn't never let their grandkids play here with us."

"They wasn't very friendly ANY TIME I said 'hi' to them," said Duo with a look of contempt. "They was even mean to Quatre and Trowa an' that made me REAL MAD. They've never done nothin' to make the neighbors mad in their WHOLE LIFES."

"Melody sure wasn't happy when you tied their garden hose up in knots 'cause they did that," Wufei said.

"Well, I couldn't stand it that they made Quatre and Trowa sad!" Duo declared indignantly. "An' for ab'slutely NO REASON!"

"Yeah, I can't stand to see Quatre with that kicked puppy look on his face," said Heero. "At least when Trowa's sad he don't look like that."

"An' it sure was funny when they tried to put the sprinkler on! I couldn't a stopped laughin' for NOTHIN'!" Duo chuckled fondly at the memory.

"Rollin' on the ground an' laughin' your head off wasn't the best thing ya coulda done when ya saw 'em get mad 'bout the hose," said Wufei. "Ya gotta be quieter 'bout how funny ya think that stuff is or ya get caught quicker."

They absorbed Wufei's wisdom for a few moments.

"An' ya ever noticed how those two houses 'cross the street at the end over there NEVER gets sold?" asked Duo with a puzzled expression. "I wonder what's wrong with 'em?"

"Maybe they got bats in the attic or somethin'," offered Heero.

"BOTH of 'em?" Duo said incredulously. "I dunno 'bout that."

"The last time I saw someone tryin' to sell the yellow house, I heard the people tell the guy sellin' the house that they'd talked to the neighbors down the street a ways and that they said only a fool would move in down at our end of the street. That made me real mad. Melody an' John aren't fools!" Wufei declared loyally.

"I thought it was REAL STRANGE that they said that Mr. Pierson from the hardware store said that even Mister Rogers wouldn't move in over there. I wonder why Mister Rogers wouldn't like that house? It's a nice 'nough house." Duo was genuinely puzzled; he liked Mister Rogers.

"Maybe he don't like bats," suggested Heero.

"Maybe. Or maybe he don't like yellow houses," suggested Wufei.

"Well, he coulda painted it. The house don't HAFTA stay yellow, ya know," Duo declared, using all of his logical skills.

Well, there was no arguing with THAT.

Melody decided to leave the three chibis to their ponderings. They were completely clueless as to why no one wanted to live nearby. And she wasn't going to break their little hearts by telling them! Sure, some of her chibis were rambunctious at times, she thought--well, to be fair, oftentimes--but it made her blood boil when she thought about the attitudes of the neighbors! If they only knew how sweet all of the chibis could be if and when they wanted to be... And they all looked like angels when they were asleep--each and every one of them!
