Act I: The Mess in the Kitchen
Newspapers were strewn about the kitchen floor, leaving a trail from the back door to the towel covered chair upon which Chibi Quatre sat. Most of Quatre's body and clothing were covered with red dye.
"Here's the soap and a washcloth, Quatre," said Chibi Trowa. "I'll get you a bucket of water but make sure you don't drip on the floor."
Chibi Relena entered the kitchen and, after taking one look at Quatre, she screamed, turned pale and promptly fainted. Relena's scream brought Tegan and Melody to the kitchen, quick as a flash.
"Quatre, what happened?" cried Tegan, turning a little paler herself. "Where are you hurt?"
Melody examined him quickly.
"It's only dye," she said.
Tegan breathed a sigh of relief and her color began to return to normal.
"What happened to Relena?" Tegan asked as she picked up the limp little body.
"I dunno," answered Quatre. "She just came in here an' screamed an' passed out."
Relena moaned and opened her eyes. She looked over at Quatre and immediately returned to blissful unconsciousness.
"I'll be back after I put Relena to bed," said Tegan. "And I'll bring some old towels."
"Make sure you bring LOTS of 'em--'cause we're gonna need 'em!" Trowa called as Tegan carried Relena to the Nursery.
Just then, Chibi Wufei entered the house through the back door. "Hey, Trowa," he said. "I think your circus friends are here."
"My circus friends?" Trowa asked incredulously. "I don't think so."
"Then what's with all the tents in the back yard?" Wufei wondered.
"What on earth happened?" Melody asked.
"Quatre's a Hero!" Trowa declared proudly.
Melody looked puzzled.
Tegan came back into the kitchen, sans Relena, carrying a large bundle of old towels under one arm and clean clothes for Quatre in the other. She set everything on the table.
There was a VERY loud knock on the front door. Wufei went to see who it was. He ran back to the kitchen as fast as he could go, nearly knocking Tegan over in the process.
"Whoa!" exclaimed Tegan, catching Wufei by the shoulders. "Where's the fire, Wufei?"
Wufei's eyes were as big as saucers.
"Melody," Wufei panted. "There's a REALLY BIG MAN at the door who says he wants to talk to Quatre-sama's mother." He paused. "Who's Quatre-sama, anyways?"
"That's ME!"
"Wait a minute, Quatre," she said. "You'll get dye all over the carpet."
"Sorry, Tegan," Quatre apologized. "I forgot."
"That's okay, Quatre," said Tegan. "I'll carry you wrapped in your towel."
Melody and Tegan, with Quatre in tow, went to the front door. All that could be seen of Quatre was his red-streaked cherubic face, his now-red hair and his legs from his cute chubby knees down.
A very large man dressed in Arabian garb filled most of the doorway. "Greetings, Quatre-sama," he said, bowing low. "Are these women your mother and sister?"
"My webmommie and websister," Quatre answered proudly.
"It is a great honor to meet the family of Quatre-sama," the big man said in his very deep voice, bowing low once again. "My name is Rashid. I am the leader of the Maguanac Corps."
"Why do you call him Quatre-sama?" Tegan asked.
"'Quatre-sama' is another way to say 'Master Quatre'. We have pledged to always address him in this respectful manner because Quatre-sama upheld my honor, and therefore, the honor of all the Maguanac. We are forever indebted to him because of his heroic deed."
Tegan looked through the tiny space between the very big man and the doorframe. "What are all the tents for?" she asked.
"I saved Rashid from gettin' red dye dumped on him an' they was all so happy 'bout that that they followed me home. Can I keep 'em, can I, huh? Can I?" Quatre asked eagerly, bouncing and wriggling so much that it was difficult for Tegan to keep him wrapped in his towel. "They'll help out 'round the house an' clean up after themselfs an' mow the yard an' shovel the snow an' they'll make their own food an' pertect the house 'gainst burg-u-lars. An' you won't hafta get a secur'ty 'larm now, IF you let me keep 'em." Quatre looked at Melody with his earnest big blue eyes. "PWEEZE??" he begged, his sweet little lower lip trembling slightly.
"You may rely on us, Webmommie of Quatre-sama, to protect all who live under his roof. We are devoted to him and to all whom he loves because of his heroic deed. We have promised to always be by his side," Rashid explained.
Another Maguanac--a much smaller one--came up from behind Rashid, stood on his tip-toes and tapped him on the shoulder. "We have almost all of the tents up, Sir," he said. "We made a ring of tents around the back yard and into the empty field behind the house. We had to put a few in the front yard. Where do you want us to store our Mobile Suits until we get the underground base built in the back yard?"
Rashid waved him away impatiently.
"Underground base?" queried Tegan, wide-eyed.
"What exactly did Quatre do to deserve such an honor?" Melody asked somewhat dubiously.
"He leapt in front of me and shouted for me to get out of the way so that I wouldn't be the recipient of the red dye that was thrown from the roof of the building we were passing by," Rashid explained. "It is dishonorable for a Maguanac to be caught unaware, so Quatre-sama took the dishonor upon himself to save me from disgrace. You can be proud of his bravery," Rashid said gravely.
Melody turned to Trowa, who was standing with Wufei next to Tegan and Quatre. "How did this happen?" she asked. A horrified look suddenly appeared on her face. "Please tell me that Duo and Heero aren't responsible for this."
"Oh, yes they are!" said Chibi Treize and Chibi Milliardo in unison.
Everyone turned toward them; what they saw was a pitiful sight. Standing in the kitchen doorway, their arms full of newspapers, the two chibis were soaked in green and yellow dye. Green drops were dripping from Milliardo's once platinum blonde hair. They were conscientiously placing the newspapers under them to keep from dripping on the carpet.
Quatre looked at Melody, wide-eyed. "You're not askin' us to LIE, are you Melody?" he asked, obviously shocked.
"Of course not," Melody said distractedly. "I was just hoping..."
Tegan squeezed Quatre tightly to reassure him, causing red dye to drip onto her new white sneakers.
"Tegan, give Quatre to Treize and Milliardo so they can all take baths before the dye dries," said Melody. "We have a couple of chibis to find."
Directly in front of Pierson's Hardware Store was a very colorful section of sidewalk, upon which Melody and Tegan saw all the colors of the rainbow--and a few even a rainbow doesn't have. Looking up to the roof, they saw Chibi Heero handing a very large water balloon to Chibi Duo.
"Here comes someone," Duo said eagerly.
Heero shaded his eyes against the glare of the sun. Horrified, his eyes went round and he quickly grabbed Duo's arm.
"Don't throw it--that's Melody an' Tegan!"
"Come down here this instant!" Melody ordered, startling Duo so much that he dropped his water balloon on Tegan, who immediately turned a very pretty shade of blue.
"Duo!" Heero, Melody and Tegan shouted simultaneously.
The distant whirring of the Mobile Suits beginning the excavation of the back yard met their ears.
The two guilty chibis, armed with scrub brushes and a bucket of soapy water, were reluctantly scrubbing the sidewalk under the watchful gaze of the brightly tinted Treize and Milliardo. Milliardo's emerald green hair shone in the late afternoon sun.
"We wouldn't be in so much trouble if you hadn't a gave me that balloon," grumbled Duo.
"We wouldn't be in trouble AT ALL if you hadn't a thought of throwin' water balloons in the first place," Heero growled.
"YOU"RE the one who wanted to put DYE in 'em," Duo shot back.
"I didn't think we'd get dye on anybody we KNOW," pouted Heero.
"Just keep scrubbing," ordered Treize.
"Heero, stop hoggin' the bucket!"
"Well, have it then!"
"Hey, watch it!"
"YOU'RE the one who wanted the bucket!"
"Well, let's see how YOU like it then!"
Heero lunged at Duo and grabbed him by the collar. They hit and scratched and rolled in the multi-colored soapy water. It took nearly five minutes for Treize and Milliardo to pry the slippery boys apart.
Milliardo and Treize forcibly held the seething chibis FAR away from each other.
"If this task is to be completed expeditiously," said Treize, speaking loudly because Phase I of the underground base project was still underway, "I think it would be advantageous to obtain a second bucket and place Heero and Duo at opposite ends of the sidewalk," Treize wisely suggested to Milliardo. "Don't you?"
The Shooting Stars Collection in no way endorses the use of water balloons to drop off of Hardware Store roofs, or any other building for that matter--especially if they have dye in them! Kids--don't try this at home--or anywhere else!
