Operation Tooth Fairy
Act I
It was a cold and rainy Sunday night when Melody, John and Tegan had to leave for a webparent coping seminar. They didn’t get to say goodbye because of the storm, which was also the reason the babysitters were late. The chibis were awaiting their babysitters. They jumped at the thunder as the door swung open. Two dark figures entered the doorway. As the light was switched on, it was revealed that only one of those figures was truly dark, yet he looked a lot nicer than the pale babysitter. The chibis all looked relieved as they came out from their hiding places behind the couch. They recognized the teenage Zero, and figured his friend would be just as easy to get along with. Chibi Relena looked around for Chibi Zero, but to her disappointment he hadn’t come.
“Who’s that?” Duo wondered.
Zero smiled at Duo as he heard the loud chibi’s question. “This is my friend, Josh. He’s here to help me babysit you kids,” he said.
“We don’t need to be babysitted,” Wufei said, and folded his arms.
“Yes, you do,” Zero said and smiled at Wufei. “Melody said so.”
“Do not,” Wufei argued.
“Hey! I like our babysitter!” Relena said.
“Thank you,” Zero said.
Relena smiled up at him and asked, “Where’s Melody an’ John an’ Tegan?”
“Uh…they’re going to be gone for a couple of days. They’re going to a seminar,” Zero said. He didn’t want to tell the chibis that they were taking a web parenting coping seminar because he worried that it might hurt their feelings.
“What kinda sem’nar?” Quatre asked.
Zero just smiled and patted the little blonde boy’s head. Josh sighed.
“Did you guys eat dinner yet?” Josh asked.
The chibis all shook their heads.
Zero rubbed his hands together and said, “Alrighty then, I’m gonna cook you all something special.”
“Can I help?” Relena asked.
Before Zero could answer Duo and Heero both shouted, “No!” Relena’s eyes filled with tears and she seemed like she was about to cry.
“Sure, you can help,” Zero said.
“Yay!” Relena cheered and clapped her hands together.
“Oh no…” Heero groaned.
Josh patted Heero’s head as Relena and Zero went into the kitchen. Heero responded with a deathglare, which Josh didn't notice.
“Don’t worry,” he said, “She’s just helping. We won’t let her actually cook.”
The chibis breathed a sigh of relief as Josh went into the kitchen.
“So what should we make?” Zero asked. He opened the refrigerator and looked inside. There weren’t many ingredients for things which Zero knew how to cook. “I think we’ll go grocery shopping tomorrow,” he said.
“How long you gonna be here?” Relena asked.
Zero smiled and patted her head and said, “Until Melody gets back.”
“How long’s that?” Relena asked.
“Oh…” Relena replied, and then asked, “What can I help with?”
“Well first, can you tell us what we should make?” Zero asked.
Relena looked very thoughtful while she considered how to answer Zero’s question. Eventually she said, “Mac ‘n’ Cheese.”
“Hm…I can make that,” Zero said as he pulled a brick of cheese out of the fridge, “Could you get down the noodles please?”
Relena looked up at the cupboard where the pasta was kept. “I can’t reach that,” she said.
Josh chuckled and picked her up and said, “Now you can.” He held her up to the cupboard so that she could open it and get the pasta. Josh then set her down.
“Here!” Relena said cheerfully as she handed Zero the pasta and he thanked her.
“Alright…so um…I’ve got cheese and pasta. Now I need water…” Zero spoke as he got out a large pan to boil the water in. He turned on the sink and let the water run into the pan. Then he began to cook the noodles.
Relena got bored as she waited for the water to boil. “How long’s this gonna take?” she asked.
Zero looked at the clock and said, “Well it’ll be about an hour until it’s all done. You can go do something else if you want.”
“I’m gonna go play with Heero,” Relena said and then went into the other room.
“Leave me ‘lone, Relena!” Heero growled as Relena asked him to play. She was used to Heero not wanting to play with her, but she thought that it might be different this time because the babysitters would stick up for her.
“If you don’t play with me I’m gonna tell Zero!” Relena said.
“He’s not gonna do nothin'!” Heero yelled at her.
“What’s going on?” Zero asked from the kitchen. Josh went out to check on them.
“I believe Heero and Relena are fighting,” Josh said. Zero rolled his eyes and stirred the noodles while they boiled.
“Told you,” Heero said.
Relena’s eyes watered and she stuck her thumb in her mouth.
Josh saw this and walked up to them and said, “You really should play with her. I mean, she doesn’t have any other girls to play with here.”
“What about Hilde?” Duo suggested.
“I don’t see her here,” Josh said.
“She’s not,” Relena pointed out.
“Exactly my point,” Josh said.
“So if we get a girl to play with her then we won’t have to?” Heero asked.
“Good luck with that,” Josh said. He gave up trying to reason with the chibis and went back into the kitchen with Zero.
For a little while everything was quiet in the living room. Then Zero and Josh heard Heero say, “Relena, g ‘way!”
“But pumpkin!” Relena protested, “I wanna be with you. An’ the babysitter said you hafta play with me!”
“Nuh uh, he said we SHOULD,” Duo corrected, “Not we HAFTA.”
“Right,”
Chibis Trowa and Quatre were having a pretend tea party. Wufei was practicing martial arts on the sofa, which he wasn’t supposed to do. Relena looked from one game to another, then pulled her lips into a pout and looked at Heero and Duo, who were playing battle with their Gundam Models.
“You can play with us, Relena,” Quatre offered. He was usually the nicest person to Relena. Relena wanted to play with Heero, but she did like playing tea parties. She picked up one of her dolls that was lying on the floor and went over to play with them.
The storm outside was getting heavier. Relena was just as tired of playing with Quatre and Trowa as they were of her, and that wasn’t very tired of each other, but just enough for them to stop playing. The timer on the oven was ringing. Zero had just pulled the macaroni and cheese out of the oven when lightning struck a nearby power line and the electricity went off.
Heero groaned as Relena cried, “Heero, I’m scared!” and latched onto his arm so he could protect her. Heero didn’t want to protect Relena, or admit that he was a little scared too so he just said. “Go ‘way, crybaby!”
“Is everyone okay?” Zero asked. He had been expecting the storm to get heavy and possibly to have a power outage, so he had planned ahead and brought extra flashlights and candles so he wouldn’t have to find whatever ones Melody had.
Quatre ran over to Zero and hugged his leg. Zero patted his head and then looked at the others. They seemed fine enough.
“Weren’t there two other chibis here?”
“We’re right here,” Milliardo said. He was standing at the top of the stairs and holding onto a book in one hand, a flashlight in the other. Treize was beside him.
“Alright, well…dinner’s done,” Zero said.
“Right, I’ll go put up some flashlights so we can see,” Josh said. He went into the kitchen. In about 15 minutes he came back out into the living room.
“Let’s go eat,” Zero said. He led everyone into the kitchen. It was bright around the table. There were a couple big flashlights and 3 smaller ones on the counter pointed towards the table.
The chibis were impressed as they sat down. Zero began to serve chibi sized portions of macaroni and cheese to them. Duo was looking around as he got his macaroni and cheese.
“What’s wrong?” Zero asked.
“Where’s the ketchup?” Duo asked.
Zero looked disgusted as he asked, “Why?”
Duo pointed to his macaroni and cheese as Josh got out the ketchup. He squirted a little on Duo’s food for him.
Zero had heard about food fights from Melody, and he had told Josh about them. Josh didn’t want to risk Duo squirting anyone. He also knew how sensitive Zero was about his cooking, and would have felt bad if Duo put so much ketchup on his food that ketchup was all he could taste. Zero smiled a little and then frowned as Josh put some of the ketchup on his own food. Josh gave Zero an apologetic smile.
“Anyone else?” Zero asked.
“That’s so gross!” Relena exclaimed.
Zero chuckled and said, “Okay…now, who wants to ask the blessing?”
“I’ll do it,” Milliardo offered. He folded his hands and bowed his head. The other chibis followed his example. Duo was fidgeting a little though from having to sit still and be quiet.
When Milliardo had finished asking the blessing and the chibis and chibisitters had all said “Amen” it was time to eat.
Chibi Relena took a bite of her macaroni and cheese and suddenly looked very unhappy.
Zero looked up at her as she touched one of her teeth. “Are you okay? Is it too hot?” he asked.
Relena shook her head. Zero then observed that she was pushing one of her teeth.
“Aww, you’ve got a loose tooth!” he said.
“I won’t swallow it if I eat, will I?” Relena asked. She sounded afraid to take another bite of food.
“Only if it comes off and you don’t realize it,” Zero said, “Just chew with your other teeth.
Relena tried to chew with her other teeth like Zero said, but then she forgot and chewed with her loose tooth. The sticky cheese and the pasta caused her tooth to feel very uncomfortable.
“I can’t finish. My tooth hurts,” Relena complained.
Zero nodded and got up to put her food away in the fridge. He knew the power was out, but it might come back on before anything spoiled. If it didn’t he’d just clean out the fridge of anything that spoiled before everyone got back. He had to buy some more groceries so he could cook more of his special meals for the chibis, so he promised to replace anything that would go bad, but he hoped nothing would, especially not the left over macaroni and cheese.
