Act 1

It was a week before Valentine's Day. High schoolers in a large town were beginning preparations for the huge Valentine's Day dance on Thursday night. These preparations included buying or fixing up or picking out the prettiest red-pink-white gown for girls and red-white clothes for the guys, buying or ordering candy, flowers, cards, jewelry, picking out the perfect cologne, planning romantic dates for before/after/or instead of the dance, and let's not forget, finding a date!

Our story begins inside the school. The last class before students were released for the weekend.

"Relena..." A teenage girl with honey brown hair and the most beautiful blue eyes turned around to face the boy behind her.

"Heero!" The Prussian blues eyes staring back at her from behind brown bangs seemed to glow with an emotion Relena had never seen in them before. Suddenly the bell for the last class rang and the boy’s eyes looked emotionless again as he turned and headed off to class. Relena turned to go to her last class and bumped into a friend of hers. "Quatre! What a pleasant surprise...Oh, no! I'm gonna be late!" Relena cried, kneeling to pick up her books. The blond boy quickly scooped up Relena's books that she had dropped and then picked up his.

"Have you seen Dorothy? I haven't seen her at all today!" he said, sounding worried.

"No, I haven't seen her since I saw Duo making faces at her." Relena answered. "That was first period."

Quatre thanked her and took off down the hall. He entered the classroom and bowed. "Gomen nasi sensei!" he apologized. "I was looking for a friend!"

Seeing the worry in Quatre's eyes the teacher said, "Don't worry about it, just please take a seat."

As Quatre sat down between his friends Trowa and Heero, and behind Duo, the teacher said, "Please stay in your seats and talk quietly while I take these papers to the office to scan." And he hurried out of the room.

Quatre looked over at Dorothy's empty desk near the back of the other side of the room. Duo stretched himself across his desk. Quatre put his hand on the braided boy's shoulder and asked, "Duo, what did you say to Dorothy this morning?"

"Me? Aw...nothing...I just told her that I'd ask her out if I wasn't already dating someone who didn't have tweezers for eyebrows," Duo answered. "I don't see the big deal, but she turned and ran off crying."

Quatre sat back. "Duo...Dorothy is very sensitive about her eyebrows. Why did you say that to her? Do you try to hurt people's feelings? I mean...like Relena...she's afraid to wear pink around you for fear you might say something about it!" he said.

Heero whacked Duo on the back of the head with his notebook.

"Hey!" Duo objected. "I was trying to tell her how pretty she was, except for her eyebrows!"

The unibanged boy, Trowa, tapped Quatre on his shoulder and pointed out the window.

"Dorothy..." Quatre stood up and walked over to the window. He saw what looked like an angel, platinum blond hair flowing down to her knees, but the red school uniform told no lies. Dorothy was walking in the school yard. She disappeared into the woods in the back. Quatre rushed out of the classroom, leaving Heero, Trowa, and Duo all blinking confusedly. He ran out of the school, around the building, and into the woods. As soon as he hit the dark, damp treed setting, he heard crying and hiccupping and sniffling.

Quatre followed the crying until he saw Dorothy, leaning against a tree, hugging it. She saw Quatre looking at her, staring, and shoved her face into the bark of the tree sobbing "Don't look at me! I'm ugly!"

"Surely you can't be saying that over what Duo said this morning...can you?" Quatre asked, leaning against a tree in front of Dorothy.

Dorothy buried her face deeper. "My eyebrows are ugly! Everyone's been telling me this all my life! Even my parents tried to fix them but they grew back worse! Everyone is so mean! They push me and push me and sometimes they throw things at me because I'm such an ugly witch!"

"You're not a witch," Quatre said. "And Duo meant to compliment you today. Besides...I think...I think you're beautiful..."

Dorothy looked up Dorothy looked up sharply, her blue eyes blazing angrily. "You lie!"

"Dorothy..." Quatre said, leaning towards her. "Would I lie to a friend like you? We've known each other since 3rd grade. I'd think you'd know me better to lie about my feelings."

"Oh really? Then why didn't you tell me you thought I was pretty before?" Dorothy asked, still skeptical.

"Because...I guess I was shy."

"Shy, embarrassed, or lying?" Dorothy demanded. "You were probably just 'shy' because you didn't want to be seen hanging around an ugly girl like me!" Dorothy wiped tears from her cobalt blue eyes. "Besides, I remind Duo of vegetable Lo-Mei n." she sniffled.

Quatre laughed. "Dorothy...that's one of Duo's favorite foods." he said. "And yeah, he was teasing you about your 'chopstick' like eyebrows. Hey Dorothy, where have you been all day?"

"I was...hiding in the girl’s bathroom," Dorothy answered.

"Ah...no wonder I never thought to look there!" Quatre laughed. "Boy, you had me worried!"

"You...you were looking for me?" Dorothy asked, her tone softening.

Quatre nodded.

"Why?" Dorothy wondered.

Quatre took Dorothy's hands in his and asked in the most romantic way, "Dorothy Catalonia, would you go to the Valentine's Day dance with me next week?"

Dorothy pulled her hands from Quatre. "You seriously want to go with me?!" she asked.

Quatre answered, "Yes" as sincerely as possible, which was very sincere.

Dorothy smiled. "Wow! I guess you ARE serious! Okay!"

Quatre checked his watch then asked Dorothy, "So...where were you headed to anyway?"

"This is a shortcut home." Dorothy explained.

"Why don't you come back to classes?" Quatre asked. "I think someone owes you an apology..."

"Only if..." Dorothy began.

"Only if what?" Quatre asked.

"Only if you take my hand and drag me back!" Dorothy answered, winking at him.

Quatre grinned and took Dorothy's hand in his and walked back to the building saying, "I thought by dragging you, you'd be a little bit more resisting!"

Dorothy laughed.

Quatre entered the classroom with Dorothy behind him. Dorothy took her seat without saying a word to the teacher. "Ms. Catalonia, Mr. Winner...Please see me after class." he said. Dorothy shrunk lower in her seat.

The bell rang 30 minutes or so later. Everyone except Dorothy, Quatre, and the teacher left the classroom. The teacher looked at Quatre first. Before he could speak Dorothy explained, "It's not Quatre's fault...It's mine...I wasn't feeling good so I hid in the bathroom all day then tried to go home. He was worried about me and brought me back!"

The teacher blinked and looked at Quatre, who said nothing, not wanting to lie but not wanting Dorothy to be in trouble. Finally, after thinking it over, Quatre said, "Dorothy's been dealing with 'bully problems' and she really was afraid to come to classes today. So I went to look for her because I was worried."

The teacher told Dorothy and Quatre they'd have to stay after to make up the class time they missed. Quatre didn't need to stay after as long as Dorothy did, but offered to help the other teachers she stayed after for because she had missed more than one class that day. Other than that, the teacher told Dorothy that there was nothing he could do about the 'bully problems' unless she would go to the office to file a complaint. Dorothy decided against it saying, "It would only worsen the problem..."

"Besides," Quatre said, "not all of them really mean it."

Act 2

Thursday was the last day of Dorothy's detention that week. Quatre had finished helping the teachers and was all dressed up for the dance at the school that was to take place in 2 hours. He met Dorothy at the door. Dorothy was wearing a pink dress, a red headband, and red earrings. Quatre was dressed in all white except for a red tie.

"Good afternoon Ms. Catalonia. My, how lovely you look today!" he teased her as she passed him on her way out.

Dorothy turned around. "You too, Quatre..."

Quatre smiled and held out his hand to her. "I forgot to tell you...I caught Duo in the hall that day last week and told him he owed you an apology...He said he was working on it," he said as Dorothy took his hand. "He said to meet him at the coffee house on the four corners of town."

Quatre and Dorothy entered the coffee house and saw Duo, Hilde, Trowa, Catherine, Heero, and Relena all standing by a table with a pink tablecloth and all white tea dishes, the teapot set in the middle.

"Happy Valentine's Day to the new cutest couple in town!" they cheered, causing Dorothy and Quatre both to blush deep red.

"Hey, Dorothy...here's my apology to you...I really meant no harm..." Duo said, handing Dorothy a heart-shaped box of chocolates and a little card inside.

Dorothy read the card and opened the box of chocolates. "Thanks Duo...I forgive you because Quatre told me what you meant," Dorothy said, smiling. "Oh! I almost forgot!" She took a stuffed teddy bear holding a real heart shaped box of chocolates and handing it to Quatre. Quatre turned an even deeper red.

"Well?" Relena asked, setting a hand on Quatre's shoulder.

"Don't you have something for the lovely lady here?" Trowa asked.

"It's okay..." Dorothy said, taking a sip of her tea. "It's a first date for both of us and I'm sure he's just not used to these things...Honestly..."

Everyone looked disappointed.

"Well...I actually do have something for you..." Quatre said. "I'm just hoping you'll accept it...This being a first date and all...I picked out the prettiest one thinking of you!"

"Prettiest what?" Dorothy asked, looking up from her tea as Quatre reached into his own backpack and pulled out a box of chocolates with a ribbon made of real golden threads.

"Prettiest box of chocolates?" everyone asked as Dorothy took off the ribbon and opened the box. Everyone gasped, especially Dorothy. Inside the box were the most expensive looking chocolates, not to mention the most delicious she had ever seen! Also, in the center of the box was another little box without a lid. Everyone could clearly see a real diamond ring set in 24 karat gold. Dorothy too k the ring out and slipped it on her finger. "How could you afford this?" she asked Quatre.

"Well...for one, I'm rich...I'm sorry I never told you, but I don't like rubbing things in people's faces," Quatre answered. "And second...I kinda worked for some of the money to buy that especially for you!"

"Oh Heero! Isn't it beautiful?!" Relena gasped.

"Don't go getting any ideas..." Heero said. "I'm poor..." He reached into his pocket and pulled out a mood ring. "But you can have this that I bought for you instead...And I'll buy you a box of chocolates...if you go to the dance with me..."

"Oh Heero! That's blackmail!" Relena said, snatching the ring out of his hand and slipping it onto her finger. "Okay, but only if you accept the ones I bought for you..." she said. Heero looked up surprised. "You bought some for me?"

"Of course! I've had a crush on you since 3rd grade!" Relena laughed.

"That's not the smartest thing to tell a guy!" Duo laughed.

"Yeah...If you would have told me that in third grade it would've been easier and less confusing!" Heero said. "Not that at that age I would have appreciated it..."

Trowa looked up and said, "Look...Dorothy and Quatre are gone!"

Catherine checked the clock on the wall before exclaiming, "We're late for the dance!"

Quatre and Dorothy danced throughout the night to love songs, decent ones. The slow ones were the most romantic where Quatre and Dorothy felt like they were flying through a starry sky.

During one of the other dances, one of the bullies bumped purposely into Dorothy. "Sorry, eyebrow girl," he lied. "Oh, Quatre, what're you doing here? This girl yours? Oh, sorry.... I didn't know."

Before Quatre and Dorothy knew it a whole group of bullies, female and male were surrounding them. "Oooo...Winner's won himself a real prize this time...Did you go to 'looser circle' for that?" one asked rudely.

"What do you mean by that? I don't speak idiot," Quatre said.

The bully pushed Quatre, stepping on Dorothy's ankle and causing her to cry out in pain.

"Why are you so mean? Her eyebrows are beautiful...Treize...And have you ever seen your own? And those bangs...I can't believe you're dating this looser, Une," Quatre said.

"What did you call me?!" Treize shouted, pushing Quatre ALMOST into the refreshment's table. Une, the girl who was dancing with Treize, put her hand on the bully's shoulder."Alright...You're ruining the fun...If you don't leave these two alone and dance with me, I'm dumping you right on the spot!"

Dorothy sat up wondering why Une was defending her . The girl seemed to have a split personality, one moment she was picking on people, another moment she was yelling at people to be nicer.

Treize left Quatre, afraid of the embarrassment of being dumped in front of 100 people and went back to dancing with his girlfriend.

Quatre helped Dorothy up and asked, "Are you okay?"

Dorothy started to cry. "My ankle! Ouch! I can't stand! I just wanna go home!"

Quatre carried Dorothy piggyback outside the gym. He met Relena and Heero and the others who were just about to enter. "What's going on?" Relena asked.

"Oh nothing, I was just dancing with this little beauty here and that loser Treize hurt Dorothy's ankle, I guess trying to get to me," Quatre said. "But you know, I don't care who picks on her! I still love her and I'm gonna be by her side to defend her always!"

Everyone thought Quatre had a good attitude. Every day after that Valentine's Day, nobody ever picked on Dorothy because of her eyebrows again because she had so many friends that were willing to 'shut them up one way or another'.
